The prisoners of Alcatraz had a constant reminder of what they were missing only a mere mile and a half away (San Francisco) – by looking out the nearest window. Those who were unruly were placed in solitary confinement – a jail within a jail – a lonely stay in the dark. I wanted to capture the feeling of both hope and dread that being in this room brings to the heart. The light pouring in reminds you that you are only a closed door away from despair.
